Schengen Visa Photo Requirements: Size, Face and Background
Schengen visa photos are 35 x 45 mm, in colour and recent, with the face filling 70 to 80% of the height (head about 32 to 36 mm), on a plain light background, usually white or light grey. They follow the same biometric standard as most passports.
One standard for the whole area
Schengen countries follow the international biometric photo standard, so the core rules are the same whether you apply to France, Germany, Italy, Spain or another member. Some consulates add small details, so read the checklist for your application centre too.
Size and face
The photo is 35 x 45 mm. Your face, from chin to the top of the head, should fill 70 to 80% of the photo height, which works out to about 32 to 36 mm. The head should be centred and straight.
Background and light
Use a plain, light background, usually white or light grey, with no shadows. Light should be even across the face. The photo should be taken in the last 6 months and printed in colour on good quality photo paper.
Expression, glasses and coverings
Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and eyes open. If you wear glasses, there must be no glare and the frames must not cover the eyes; many consulates prefer them removed. Head coverings are accepted only for religious reasons, with the face fully visible.
Make it with SleekCut
Take the photo against a plain white or light grey wall, then open the Schengen Visa Photo page and drop it in. Biometric photos must not be digitally altered, so your real background is kept. The head is sized to the 32 to 36 mm range, and the guides show the head and chin positions. Download a 4 x 6 sheet with several copies, since visa applications often ask for two.
