What Is AVIF and How to Open or Convert It

Quick answer

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It is smaller than JPG and WebP at similar quality, which is why websites use it, but many editors and upload forms cannot open it. Convert AVIF to JPG or PNG in your browser to use it anywhere.

Where AVIF comes from

AVIF stores still images using the AV1 video codec, developed by an industry group that includes major browser and streaming companies. It is royalty free.

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all display AVIF, so many websites now serve it to save bandwidth.

Why you suddenly have AVIF files

When you save an image from a website, you may get the AVIF version the site served to your browser, even if the original was a JPG.

Then you try to open it in an older app, attach it to a form or post it somewhere, and it fails.

Strengths and weak spots

Strengths: very small files, good detail, transparency and support for high dynamic range.

Weak spots: many desktop apps, older phones, upload forms and marketplaces do not accept AVIF yet, and encoding AVIF is slow.

Convert AVIF to JPG or PNG

1. Open the SleekCut AVIF to JPG converter, or AVIF to PNG if you need transparency.

2. Drop one file or many.

3. Download each file or a ZIP.

The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Which output to choose

JPG for photos you want to share, print or upload anywhere. PNG for graphics or images with transparent areas. WebP for putting the image back on a website at a small size.

Should you use AVIF on your own site?

It can make pages faster, but always keep a fallback. Many sites serve AVIF with WebP or JPG fallbacks so every visitor gets an image.
