How to Take Consistent Product Photos at Home for Your Shop

Quick answer

Consistency comes from repeating the same setup, not from editing. Shoot every product in the same spot, light, distance and angle, then process the whole set together: same background, same crop shape and the same margin around each item. Check edges and colours before you upload.

Why consistency matters more than perfection

Shoppers judge a shop page as a whole. A grid of photos with the same background, the same framing and similar light looks trustworthy, even if each photo is simple. A grid where every photo was taken differently looks messy, even if some photos are great.

The good news is that consistency is mostly a setup habit. Decide once how you will shoot, write it down and repeat it for every product.

Set up once, shoot many

Pick one spot next to a large window and use it every time. Daylight from the side gives soft shadows that show shape. Avoid mixing daylight with warm ceiling lights, which shift colours between photos.

Put a sheet of white card or paper on the table and curve it up against a wall or box behind the product. This curve, often called a sweep, hides the corner where table meets wall.

Mark where the product and the phone go with small pieces of tape. Keep the phone at the same height and distance for every shot, and use the normal 1x lens rather than wide angle, which bends straight edges.

Plan your shots

Most listings need the same set of views: front, back or side, a close detail and one photo that shows scale, such as the product in a hand. Shoot them in the same order for every product, so the shop grid lines up.

Leave space around the product in every shot. Marketplaces crop thumbnails differently, and a product that touches the frame edge gets clipped.

Process the whole set together

1. Open Product Photo Set and drop all the photos from one session.

2. Press Make the set. Each product is cut out and placed on the same background, shape and margin.

3. Adjust the look once: background, shape such as square or 4:5, space around the product and a soft shadow. Every photo updates together. Press Save as my shop look to reuse it next time.

4. Tap each photo to check its edges, then download the set as a ZIP. Everything runs on your device, so unreleased products stay private.

Check before you upload

Look at each cutout at full size. Fine details like fur, thin cords, handles, glass and see through packaging are the hardest for any background remover. If one photo is off, open it in Remove Background and use the Erase and Restore brushes to fix the edge.

Compare colours with the real product next to your screen. If the photos look too warm or too cool, the light was mixed; reshooting in daylight fixes it better than editing.

Never let a tool change the product itself. Labels, logos, texture and small defects should look exactly like the item a buyer will receive.

Know your marketplace rules

Marketplaces publish their own image guidance: minimum sizes, preferred shapes, whether the first photo needs a white background, and how thumbnails are cropped. Read the guidance for each place you sell and keep a note of the sizes next to your shooting checklist.

What the tools cannot fix

Blurry photos stay blurry, and a background remover cannot rebuild details that were not captured. Very reflective products such as jewellery or chrome may pick up colours from the room. For those, shoot inside a white box or tent and accept that some manual cleanup is part of the job.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a lightbox for product photos?

No. A window, a sheet of white card curved into a sweep and a phone on a steady surface are enough for most small products. A lightbox helps most with shiny items.

How do I make all my product photos the same size?

Shoot from the same distance every time, then crop or resize the whole set to one shape, such as square, and leave the same margin around each product.

Are my product photos uploaded?

No. SleekCut processes them in your browser, on your device.
