How to Compress Images Without Losing Quality

Quick answer

Resize the image to the size it is actually shown at, save photos as JPG or WebP at 70 to 80% quality, and use WebP instead of PNG for large images. That usually cuts file size by 60 to 90%.

Resize first

A 4000 pixel wide photo shown at 1200 pixels wastes most of its data. Setting a maximum width of 1920 or 1280 is the biggest single saving.

Pick the right format

JPG is best for photos. WebP is smaller still and supports transparency. PNG is for screenshots and graphics that need perfectly sharp edges.

Use 70 to 80% quality

Above 85% the file grows quickly with little visible gain. Around 75% is a sweet spot for most photos.

Compress in your browser

Drop your images into the SleekCut Compress Image tool, keep Auto format, choose a quality and maximum width, and download each file or all as a ZIP. Each file shows how much you saved.
