How to Extend an Image Background (Uncrop With AI)
Pick the new shape, place the photo where you want it and let an AI extender fill the new space. Simple backgrounds like walls, skies, water and studio backdrops extend best. Extend modestly and keep people and text away from the edges you extend.
Why extend instead of crop?
Social platforms keep asking for different shapes: 16:9 thumbnails, 9:16 stories, 4:5 posts and 3:1 banners. Cropping a photo to fit throws away part of it, often a head or a hand.
Extending keeps the whole photo and adds new background around it, so the subject stays exactly as it was.
How AI extension works
The extender looks at the pixels along the edge of your photo and predicts what continues beyond them. Near the photo it rebuilds texture and light so the join is invisible. Further out SleekCut blends into a smooth continuation of the edge colours, which keeps large extensions calm instead of filled with invented objects.
Step by step
1. Open the AI Image Extender and drop your photo.
2. Choose a shape such as 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or Banner 3:1, or choose More room to add space on every side.
3. Drag the photo inside the frame to decide where the new space goes. A portrait placed on the left of a 16:9 frame leaves room for a title on the right.
4. Tap Extend with AI and download.
Photos that extend well
Plain walls, studio backdrops, skies, seas, lawns, sand, snow and blurred backgrounds extend almost perfectly. Product shots on a table, portraits against a wall and landscapes with a soft horizon also work well.
Busy scenes with crowds, text, patterned wallpaper or objects cut off at the edge are hard for any extender. Extend less, or crop out the busy edge first.
Tips for clean results
Extend by up to about half the photo width at a time. For a big change, extend once, download, and extend the result again.
Keep the subject a little away from the edges you extend. A shoulder or a hand touching the edge gives the AI half an object to continue, which rarely looks right.
After extending, open the result in the Object Remover to clean up any small mark, or in the Photo Editor to even out colour.
Other ways to fill the space
If you only need the photo to fit, the social resizers offer Whole photo with a blurred copy, white or black around it, and an AI fill option that uses the same extender. A blurred border is quick and always clean; AI fill looks more natural on simple backgrounds.
